David Eric Grohl was born to James and Virginia Grohl on the 14th January '69 in Warren, Ohia. He came from a musical background as his Mum sang with bands when she was younger and his Dad was an accomplished flutist. He said he always had guitar in his hand for as long as he could remember.
Like Kurt his parents divorced when he was 6 and he didn't develop his musical talent until ten, at that age the only song he could play was 'Smoke on the Water' and everyone was sick of it. He then stopped playing in lessons and preferred to develop his own style and learned to play by mimicking the Beatles. As early as 11 he was recoring his own material with his friend Larry Hinkle. For Christmas aged twelve, he received his first electric guitar. He was captivated by the amount he could do with the electric and he played it so much that it broke by spring and was replaced. After, he joined a band that did covers at parties, schools and nursing homes.
He was introduced to punk and new wave in '82 by his cousin when it was still a sub-culture and that year he saw his first rock gig, 'Naked Ray-Gun' and 'ROTA'. He carried on playing for different bands including 'Scream' who were an extremely respected band and one of Kurt's favourites. He then joined Nirvana in 1990. They were pleased to snap him up as they had seen him play and were very impressed. Krist and Kurt had particularly liked his ability to really hit the drums hard and still stay right on tempo. At times in the studio, the guitars would be turned up to full volume with massive overdrive and the drums could still be heard clearly above the clamour.
After Kurt's death and all the Nirvana hype Dave started a new band The Foo Fighters who are still going today. It included Pat Smear, who played with Nirvana live at times but he has since left the band. They have had two albums, called 'Foo Fighters' and 'The Colour and the Shape'.
